This folding screen is an accurate reproduction of Wind God and Thunder God by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a renowned artist of the late 17th century. It has been hand-drawn to reenact the drawing techniques of the time as closely as possible. The copy of the original artwork is made possible using specific methods for pasting, which allow the natural creases and textures of gold leaf to be expressed. The effects of time on the wind god and the thunder god illustrations, drawn with mineral pigments, and the brushwork used to draw the the contour have been replicated successfully. The illustrations in this epic work took one month to complete.
Painter　Tawaraya Sōtatsu A painter in early Edo era. A founder of the Rimpa school, he was the great influencer to the painters after his days. While only few historical materials are left and so little is known, he led the art studio called “Tawaraya” in Kyoto and worked on decorative arts including fans and folding screens. The product is a replication of Red and White Plum Blossoms by Ogata Kōrin, a prolific and renowned artist of the Edo period. The contrasts in Ogata Kōrin's most notable masterpiece are absolutely sublime. The light and dark are depicted by the gold leaf and flowing waters, and movement and stillness are symbolized by the red and white plum blossoms. The flowing water, which can be said to be the most remarkable detail of the artwork, is depicted using silver leaf and oxidized silver leaf, which are said to have been used at the time. Although there are various theories about how Ogata Kōrin actually illustrated the flowing water, Kōrin's artistic style has been reproduced as accurately as possible.
Painter Ogata Korin A painter and craftsman in early Edo era. The founder of the Rimpa school. He created many lucid and decorative works, and left the immeasurable influence over the modern Japanese-style paintings and crafts. Based on the Yamato-e style for many of his works, he also worked on ink-wash paintings in his later years. Major works: “Irises (property of Nezu Museum)”, “Red and White Plum Blossoms (property of MOA Museum of Art)”, and “Wind God and Thunder God (property of Tokyo National Museum)”, modeling after the work of Tawaraya Sotatsu.

The artwork has been inspired by Dragons and Clouds by Kaihō Yūshō (1522-1615), owned by Kenninji Temple. One of the dragons has been defeated, and the other has been illustrated on the folding screen. It carefully replicates the style of the original artwork, including the silver background, the simple light and shade of Kaihō Yūshō's brushwork, and the softness of the ink.
Painter Kaiho Yusho A painter in Azuchi-momoyama era to early Edo era, and the founder of the Kaiho school. Born in Omi region as the fifth son of the retainer of the Azai clan, he retreated into the Zen religion and studied in Kyoto. He is believed to learn the art in the Kano school during his Kyoto days. Influenced by the ancient Chinese paintings, he has established the unique style composed of the sharp and powerful lines and reduced brush strokes.
