Art Panel - Davallia Mariesii

This Art Panel is inspired by the Kyo-Karakami paper.
This refreshing motif of plant swaying in the wind is depicted in a stylishly simple fashion by the “heaped up leaf” technique using two different types of Kanazawa brass leaves. Perfect for Japanese as well as Western décor, this art piece gives the gorgeous accentual touch to your room.

Karakami paper was originally imported from ancient China for the exclusive use of the nobles and upper echelons of the society in Heian era. The import was later banned and the production of Karakami paper started in Kyoto. It was then when the paper became used for the household items including sliding doors and walls. Some of the traditional patterns of Karakami paper - namely, “Koetsu Paulownia”, “Korin Pine”, “Korin Mum”, and “Korin Big Wave” - are based on the Rinpa School arts.

Among the traditional patterns of Karakami paper, this piece uses a plant called “Shinobu (Davallia mariesii)” as its motif. This plant is a species of epiphytic fern, and often made into a Japanese-style moss ball called “Tsuri-shinobu (hanging Davallia mariesii)” with its rootstock as the decoration item hung from the eaves. It has been close to the life of Japanese people since Edo era. The name “Shinobu” comes from the longevity of the plant as the Japanese word “shinobu” also means endurance.
