About gold leaf
More than 98% of Japan's gold leaf is produced in Kanazawa. Gold leaves are used for various craft items including temples, shrines and with high historical values such as Kinkakuji and Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Among the traditional crafts handed down in Kanazawa, gold leaf was developed because Noh and tea ceremony were performed actively in the cultural incentive measures of the clan that traditional crafts developed.
About Kanazawa City
Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture flourished as a castle town of Maeda family known for Kaga Hyakumangoku, and the Kaga lord owners in the Edo period concentrated on cultural incentives measures. At that time many workers were invited from Kyoto and Edo, so now in Ishikawa Prefecture, 36 industries such as Kanazawa Foil, Kaga Yuzen, Kanazawa lacquer ware, Kutani ware etc are inherited as traditional craft items.
