The contrasts in Ogata Kōrin's most notable masterpiece are absolutely sublime. The light and dark are depicted by the gold leaf and flowing waters, and movement and stillness are symbolized by the red and white plum blossoms. The flowing water, which can be said to be the most remarkable detail of the artwork, is depicted using silver leaf and oxidized silver leaf, which are said to have been used at the time.
