Two types of foil—champagne gold and Sanpo-iro—have been applied like a soft haze, creating a refined decorative effect. In ancient Japan, darkness was a constant presence. Unlike today, where lights shine 24 hours a day, the world would have plunged into near-complete darkness once night fell. Within that darkness, a full moon must have appeared far more beautiful than what we see now. This folding fan is inspired by the full moon as it was seen by the people of ancient Japan, expressing an aesthetic sensibility engraved in our very DNA. Its bold design features gold leaf on a deep black background. The technique of applying large sheets of gold leaf to an item that opens and closes like a fan is a unique specialty of Hakuichi. Each piece is handmade, so no two fans are alike — each features unique cracks and wrinkles in the gold leaf.
