Not all oil blotting papers are created equal. HAKUICHI’s oil blotting paper stands out as one of the most effective and rapid sebum absorbers, thanks to its high-quality materials, proprietary blend, and a special patented manufacturing process that creates its signature grid pattern. Born from Tradition and Innovation: The "Gold Leaf Pounding Paper Method"
Hakuichi’s oil blotting paper was born from the traditional craft of making gold leaf, specifically from the specialized paper known as haku-uchi-gami used in the process.
In our early days, as we traveled across Japan selling Kanazawa gold leaf crafts, we received a unique request from geisha in Kyoto and stage performers: “We’d love to use haku-uchi-gami for touching up our makeup
.”
However, the original haku-uchi-gami contained ingredients like persimmon tannin and egg whites, and was used repeatedly during the gold-beating process. Our founder believed it was not suitable for direct use on the skin in that form.
- The Birth of Our Original Method through Continuous Research and Refinement
-
We sourced a wide variety of paper from all over Japan and conducted repeated experiments. Using an actual gold leaf pounding machine, we meticulously tested how different striking techniques and frequencies affected oil absorption.
Through persistent trial and error, we explored the ideal balance of materials. This dedication ultimately led to the development of our current oil blotting paper.
Building on gold leaf craftsmanship, Hakuichi became the first in Japan to develop the Gold Leaf Pounding Paper Method in 1976.
- Supporting Women through the Changing Times
-
In the glamorous economic boom of the late 1980s, as more women entered the workforce, there was a growing awareness of personal grooming and beauty. During this time, Hakuichi’s oil blotting paper gained attention as a "luxurious daily essential."
It was featured in numerous women’s magazines and newspapers, sparking a major trend. The popularity of the product from that era is even documented in our factory journals.
- Evolving Bijin-ga and a Message to Women
-
Early packaging featured the name Furuya Paper, reflecting its traditional roots. However, in the 1980s, a new design was introduced—one inspired by the graceful bijin-ga (paintings of beautiful women) by renowned Nihonga artist Shōen Uemura.
It was reborn as a design imbued with a deep respect for beauty and a sense of kindness toward women.
- To women living in the modern era
-
Marking the 40th anniversary of the birth of our oil blotting paper, the cover design has been renewed to feature a modern image of women, created by Japanese painter Kazuya Yamashita.
With countless brushstrokes, he captured in the eyes a gaze that embodies the spirit of "women living in the present."
- Kaga Yuzen — One of Japan’s Three Great Yuzen Dyeing Traditions
-
The kimono colors depicted in the reimagined bijinga (beautiful women portraits) feature the traditional five hues of Kaga Yuzen—deep red (enji), indigo (ai), ocher (ōdo), green (kusa), and ancient purple (kodaimurasaki).
The kimono in enji (deep red) is specially adorned with wisteria and Chinese bellflowers (kikyo).
Kaga Yuzen, alongside Kyo Yuzen and Edo Yuzen, is one of the three major Yuzen dyeing styles in Japan. It is known for its realistic floral motifs and natural shading expressions.
This delicate dyeing technique involves entirely hand-done processes by skilled artisans.
- * Our Passion for an Oil Blotting Paper Specialty Shop
-
In 2019, Utsukushiya, a specialty store for oil blotting papers, opened in the historic Higashi Chaya District.
Founded on the concept of “supporting women’s beauty,” the shop is part of Hakuichi’s effort to restore traditional townhouses. A collapsing machiya was carefully revived—its charm preserved, and structure strengthened for safety.
The shop’s logo, designed by renowned calligrapher Suito Nakatsuka (of Kirin ga Kuru fame), blends boldness with feminine grace.
Utsukushiya offers a wide range of oil blotting papers, including those featuring bijinga (portraits of beautiful women), along with seasonal limited editions. If you're in Kanazawa, we warmly welcome you to stop by and experience this refined beauty.
