The tradition of decorating washi with gold and silver leaf dates back to the Heian period, when it was used on sliding doors, folding screens, and even the paper strips on which aristocrats composed poetry. This piece incorporates traditional techniques such as noge and sunago, while also expressing a modern sense of color.
