Flat at a glance, the mountains in this folding screen are depicted by sprinkling fine particles of gold leaves. The stereoscopic Japanese silver grass in the front emphasizes the sense of depth of autumn scenery on which the mountains stand.
Japan expressed in the minimalist layout
This folding screen portrays the ultimately minimalist scenery using only the gold and blue metal leaves.
Symbolically depicting the mountains and Japanese silver grass by the craftsmen’s technique and stereoscopic effect, this masterpiece folding screen matches superbly with other interior décor to create the very Japanese ambience in the room.
In the background is the blue-colored silver leaves called Blue Shell. It is one of Shikisai Haku (the colored metal leaves) developed by HAKUICHI’s proprietary technique. One sheet offers the subtle gradation of colors from faintly reddish blue to deep blue, and is very effective in adding the touch of depth.
The mountains standing on the Blue Shell leaves pressed onto the paper are portrayed with rougher particles of gold leaves toward the tops and finer particles toward the bases. The Japanese silver grass is drawn in a single stroke using the special materials of the stereoscopic effect and finished with gold leaves.
Stripped of all unnecessary elements in the layout, this folding screen uses only the gold and blue metal leaves with several different craftsmen’s techniques to portray the magnificent scenery.
