● Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)
A renowned ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. Trained under Katsukawa Shunshō, he began with portraits of actors, beautiful women, and illustrations. Hokusai studied a wide variety of artistic styles, including those of the Kanō, Tosa, and Rinpa schools, as well as Chinese and Western painting techniques.
His dynamic brushwork and powerful compositions led to a unique and highly influential visual style that even inspired the French Impressionists.
Famous works include “Hokusai Manga”, “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”, and “One Thousand Views of the Sea.”

● South Wind, Clear Sky (Gaifū Kaisei)
The term “Gaifū” refers to a warm southern wind. Commonly known as “Red Fuji,” this artwork portrays Mount Fuji glowing in deep red as it catches the morning sunlight in late summer to early autumn.

At its base, the rich green forest forms a vivid contrast against the red mountain. Wispy cirrocumulus clouds drift across the sky, and a dusting of snow remains on the summit—a scene unique to this time of year. Hokusai masterfully captures a fleeting, seasonal expression of Mount Fuji.

South Wind, Clear Sky (Gaifū Kaisei)
"Gaifū" refers to a southerly wind. This work by Katsushika Hokusai—commonly known as "Red Fuji"—depicts Mount Fuji bathed in the morning sunlight of late summer to early autumn, turning the mountain a striking red. At the foot of the mountain, a lush green forest contrasts beautifully with the vivid red peak. The delicate wisps of cirrocumulus clouds drifting across the sky and the lingering snow at the summit are characteristic of this particular season, capturing a fleeting yet iconic image of Mt. Fuji as it changes with the seasons. Using a special technique, the surface of the artwork has been given a subtle texture, creating shadows and highlights. This brings depth and variation to the brilliance of the Kanazawa gold leaf, enhancing its expression and visual impact.

Each one shines in a unique way
Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Timeless Art This dynamic ukiyo-e piece breathes new life into a classic masterpiece through traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Set in a sleek black frame, the artwork is presented on a luxurious panel fully adorned with Kanazawa foil, creating a striking visual presence. Clouds and other motifs are rendered using special techniques that add a three-dimensional effect. The interplay of light and shadow on the textured foil surface enhances the sense of depth and perspective, transforming what was once a flat image into a vivid, spatial composition. Because the foil reflects light, its appearance changes depending on the time of day and the type of lighting—daylight, nighttime, direct or indirect light—all contributing to the evolving ambiance of the piece. This ability to reflect different moods and settings is one of the work’s most distinctive and captivating features.
