● Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)
A renowned ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. Trained under Katsukawa Shunshō, he began with portraits of actors, beautiful women, and illustrations. Hokusai studied a wide variety of artistic styles, including those of the Kanō, Tosa, and Rinpa schools, as well as Chinese and Western painting techniques.
His dynamic brushwork and powerful compositions led to a unique and highly influential visual style that even inspired the French Impressionists.
Famous works include “Hokusai Manga”, “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji”, and “One Thousand Views of the Sea.”
● South Wind, Clear Sky (Gaifū Kaisei)
The term “Gaifū” refers to a warm southern wind. Commonly known as “Red Fuji,” this artwork portrays Mount Fuji glowing in deep red as it catches the morning sunlight in late summer to early autumn.
At its base, the rich green forest forms a vivid contrast against the red mountain. Wispy cirrocumulus clouds drift across the sky, and a dusting of snow remains on the summit—a scene unique to this time of year. Hokusai masterfully captures a fleeting, seasonal expression of Mount Fuji.
