The effects of time on the wind god and the thunder god illustrations, drawn with mineral pigments, and the brushwork used to draw the the contour have been replicated successfully. A painter in early Edo era. A founder of the Rimpa school, he was the great influencer to the painters after his days. While only few historical materials are left and so little is known, he led the art studio called “Tawaraya” in Kyoto and worked on decorative arts including fans and folding screens.
Major works: “Wind God and Thunder God (property of Kenninji, managed by Kyoto National Museum)”, and “Waterfowls in Lotus Pond (property of Kyoto National Museum)”.
This folding screen is a reproduction of Wind God and Thunder God by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a renowned artist of the late 17th century. It has been hand-drawn to reenact the drawing techniques of the time as closely as possible. In this mesmerizing piece, the impressive gold leaf, clouds drawn using ink sticks, the wind god, and the thunder god hitting the drum create tension and balance.
The original artwork belonging to Kenninji Temple (entrusted to the Kyoto National Museum) shows nonuniformity in its surface, caused by the effects of time and the difficulty of spreading the gold leaf in an even layer using the techniques of the time, adds depth to the artwork. 400 years of history can be felt from the illustration, as some of the mineral pigment has come off from the gods' arms, legs, and container.
The copy of the original artwork is made possible using specific methods for pasting, which allow the natural creases and textures of gold leaf to be expressed. We have pasted the gold leaf to create creases on the surface, so that it resembles the original art piece. The effects of time on the wind god and the thunder god illustrations, drawn with mineral pigments, and the brushwork used to draw the contour have been replicated successfully. The illustrations in this epic work took one month to complete. The last step of the illustration is completing the gods' eyes.
The eyes are always drawn last, because it is the most important step. The artist must breathe life into the illustration through the eyes.
