Folding Screen

These are symmetrical pairs of folding screens depicting an old plum tree. The blue background is formed using Kanazawa gold leaf. We have used our original color-changing techniques on the Kanazawa gold leaf. The subtle gradation of color adds depth to the illustrations. A plum tree has been illustrated against the blue background. The scattered gold leaves make the blossoms look like they are emitting light or reflecting the moonlight in the darkness of the clouds.

This folding screen portraying the flowering plants in fall is based on the “Moon and Flowering Plants of Autumn” by Sakai Hoitsu.

Sakai Hoitsu is the renowned artist in late Edo era, and one of the leading masters of the Rinpa School. He has the reputation on his poetic painting style, taking full advantage of elegance of the Rinpa School, and is known as the founder of Edo Rinpa School.
Painter Sakai Hoitsu A painter and haiku poet in late Edo era. Having tremendous respect to Ogata Korin, he is called the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He studied the art first in the Kano school as he was from a samurai clan then under Utagawa Toyoharu of the ukiyo-e style, and created the hand-paintings of the beauty. His retirement into religion at the age of 37 was believed to be the reason for the artistic change. Major works: “Autumn Flowers and Moon (managed by Tokyo National Museum)”, and “Flowering Plants of Summer (property of Tokyo National Museum)”.

This folding screen is an accurate reproduction of Wind God and Thunder God by Tawaraya Sōtatsu, a renowned artist of the late 17th century. It has been hand-drawn to reenact the drawing techniques of the time as closely as possible. The copy of the original artwork is made possible using specific methods for pasting, which allow the natural creases and textures of gold leaf to be expressed. The effects of time on the wind god and the thunder god illustrations, drawn with mineral pigments, and the brushwork used to draw the the contour have been replicated successfully. The illustrations in this epic work took one month to complete.
Painter　Tawaraya Sōtatsu
A painter in early Edo era. A founder of the Rimpa school, he was the great influencer to the painters after his days. While only few historical materials are left and so little is known, he led the art studio called “Tawaraya” in Kyoto and worked on decorative arts including fans and folding screens.
Major works: “Wind God and Thunder God (property of Kenninji, managed by Kyoto National Museum)”, and “Waterfowls in Lotus Pond (property of Kyoto National Museum)”.

Vigorous and lively pine trees are portrayed over the high quality grass paper in this signature folding screen of HAKUICHI.
The dynamic background is created by blowing the fine particles of gold leaves from the bottom, using the technique called Tsutsufuri. Rougher particles are used at the bottom and the particles become finer and finer toward the top, reminiscent of morning mist floating at the foot of pine trees or waves. As with many ink-brush paintings, this artwork leaves white, or golden, space in the background in a deliberate effort to intrigue the viewers’ imagination.

In this screen, Mount Fuji, the symbol of Japan, is beautifully illustrated with a background adorned with gold leaf.
