The Great Wave off Kanagawa (Kanagawa-oki Nami-ura)
This iconic view depicts Mt. Fuji seen from offshore at Honmoku, in what is now Yokohama. Alongside Red Fuji (South Wind, Clear Sky) and Shower Below the Summit (Rainstorm Beneath the Summit), it is considered one of the "Three Masterpieces" of Hokusai's renowned Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji series. The dramatic composition—towering waves tossing boats against the quiet presence of Mt. Fuji in the distance—has captivated audiences across cultures and generations. This is one of Hokusai’s most celebrated works, symbolizing the timeless beauty and dynamism of Japanese ukiyo-e art.

・Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)
A leading ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period, Hokusai studied under Katsukawa Shunshō and began his career with actor portraits, bijin-ga (images of beautiful women), and book illustrations. He later absorbed influences from various schools of art, including the Kanō, Tosa, and Rinpa styles, as well as Chinese and Western painting techniques. Through bold composition and dynamic brushwork, he developed a highly original visual style. His influence extended far beyond Japan, reaching the French Impressionists and beyond. Major works include Hokusai Manga, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, and One Hundred Views of the Oceans (Chie no Umi).
