● Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849)
A renowned ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period. Hokusai studied under Katsukawa Shunshō and produced portraits of actors, beautiful women, and illustrations. He went on to study a wide range of artistic styles, including those of the Kanō, Tosa, and Rinpa schools, as well as Chinese and Western painting techniques.
Through bold compositions and dynamic brushwork, he established a unique artistic world. His influence extended even to the French Impressionists.
Notable works include Hokusai Manga, Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and One Thousand Views of the Sea.
● The Great Wave off Kanagawa
This masterpiece captures a view of Mount Fuji seen from offshore near Honmoku, in present-day Yokohama.
Alongside South Wind, Clear Sky and Rainstorm Beneath the Summit, it is considered one of the "Three Great Works" from the Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji series and is widely recognized both in Japan and abroad as an icon of ukiyo-e art.
The composition—featuring a surging sea, boats struggling against the waves, and the calm, majestic Mount Fuji in the distance—continues to captivate viewers across generations and cultures.
