Painter Sakai Hoitsu A painter and haiku poet in late Edo era. Having tremendous respect to Ogata Korin, he is called the founder of the Edo Rimpa school. He studied the art first in the Kano school as he was from a samurai clan then under Utagawa Toyoharu of the ukiyo-e style, and created the hand-paintings of the beauty. His retirement into religion at the age of 37 was believed to be the reason for the artistic change. Vigorous and lively pine trees are portrayed over the high quality grass paper in this signature folding screen of HAKUICHI.
The dynamic background is created by blowing the fine particles of gold leaves from the bottom, using the technique called Tsutsufuri. Rougher particles are used at the bottom and the particles become finer and finer toward the top, reminiscent of morning mist floating at the foot of pine trees or waves. As with many ink-brush paintings, this artwork leaves white, or golden, space in the background in a deliberate effort to intrigue the viewers’ imagination.

The product is a replication of Red and White Plum Blossoms by Ogata Kōrin, a prolific and renowned artist of the Edo period. The contrasts in Ogata Kōrin's most notable masterpiece are absolutely sublime. The light and dark are depicted by the gold leaf and flowing waters, and movement and stillness are symbolized by the red and white plum blossoms. The flowing water, which can be said to be the most remarkable detail of the artwork, is depicted using silver leaf and oxidized silver leaf, which are said to have been used at the time. Although there are various theories about how Ogata Kōrin actually illustrated the flowing water, Kōrin's artistic style has been reproduced as accurately as possible.

He created many lucid and decorative works, and left the immeasurable influence over the modern Japanese-style paintings and crafts. Based on the Yamato-e style for many of his works, he also worked on ink-wash paintings in his later years. Only white torinokogami washi paper and gold leaf has been used to portray the landscape of this folding screen. Two methods have been used to paste the gold leaf. The first is the overlapping method, used for the gold leaf portraying the contour of the mountains and the trees. The second method involves sprinkling gold leaf on the water surface and mountain surfaces depict the reflection of light.
